----- COMPOSERS/MUSICIANS ----- LOUIS ANDRIESSEN World premiere January 2009 with Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen at Disney Hall Dutch Premiere June 2009 with Asko/Schönberg conducted by Reinbert de Leeuw at Concertgebouw Amsterdam UK Premiere August 2009 with Philharmonia orchestra conducted by Esa Pekka Salonen at Albert Hall for the Prom's Festival Italian premiere February 2011 with Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI conducted by Frank Ollu at Auditorium Torino  Duo pianists Katia and Marielle Labèque and the Los Angeles Philharmonic perform the world premiere of Dutch composer Louis Andriessen’s double piano concerto, “The Hague Hacking,” commissioned by the LA Phil and led by Esa-Pekka Salonen, on Friday, January 16, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, January 18, at 2 p.m. There are few works for the traditional symphony orchestra in Andriessen’s catalog, and it has been 39 years since his last concerto-like piece. Works for “large ensemble,” however, abound. The immediate roots of The Hague Hacking lie in a short piece of the same name for two pianos from 2003. The “hacking” (hakkûh) of the title is Dutch slang for the dance style of a techno-descended hardcore house music, high speed and heavy on the bass. The Minimalist Jukebox festival presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic in March 2006 included performances of De Staat and the U.S. premiere of Andriessen’s Racconto dall’Inferno. The success of these concerts encouraged Andriessen to accept a commission for a new work, which he has created from ideas he began exploring in the 2003 piece. Multiple keyboards – and two pianos, particularly – have long been important to Andriessen’s sound. The pianos here are matched with a conventional – albeit percussion-rich – orchestra, pumped up with important parts for cimbalom, electric guitar, and bass guitar. JOAN ALBERT AMARGÓS  |

In 1995, Gonzalo was awarded with a scholarship at Berklee College of Music, where he graduated in 1998 with the mention Summa Cum Laude as a Piano Performance Major. Since then he has collaborated with many projects and ensembles in traditional and contemporary Latin styles. But Gonzalo not only performs, he also produces and arranges for a variety of national and international artists such as Sally Potter Films, Mango Blue, Edwin Pabón, Brass Roots, Saxomanía, and leads his own band named La Clave Secreta (formerly known as "La Timba Loca"). He has also been part of vanguard Venezuelan projects like Maroa, Aquiles Baez Group and the Gonzalo Grau Quintet as well as the US based Maria Schneider Orchestra (Grammy Winner 2005) and Timbalaye on the Latin jazz front. In the last ten years, Gonzalo made his way into flamenco as a multi-instrumentalist on percussion, cello and piano. He has worked with renowned artists from Spain and the US such as Antonio Granjero, La Tania, La Conja, Pedro Cortés, Jesus Montoya, Edwin Aparicio, Chuscales, Omayra Amaya, and Alejandro Granados. Wearing his classical hat Gonzalo has collaborated with Argentinean composer Osvaldo Golijov in the writing of "La Pasión Según San Marcos" (2001 Grammy Award nominee), the "Ainadamar" opera (2007 Grammy Award winner) and in 2005 he composed and orchestrated for the Albuquerque Symphonic Orchestra, commissioned by the National Institute of Flamenco. His contributions to film include an arrangement of “El Carretero” for Sally Potter’s 2004 Yes and in the theatrical realm he composed and musically directed "Landscapes and Impressions" by Craig Strong and Robert Castro and produced by the Santa Fe Opera. Speaker of many musical languages, translator of many styles and creator of new fusions-Gonzalo Grau, the secret is out. |

Mark is an independent filmmaker. In 2003 Mark graduated from the Royal College of Art in London with a Masters in Animation. He made two films there; a short animated film called “Trap” and a 13-minute live-action musical called “Spinnaker Leech”. They both subsequently competed in film festivals throughout the world. On the back of these films he was awarded Film London funding to make “The Chihuahua Messiah” which was runner-up for the BBC New Filmmaker Award 2005 and won the Fortean Times film of the year 2006. He was then awarded the opportunity to make a short live-action comedy for BBC3 which was released in 2006 called “God & Dave”. This film was runner-up in the Encounters Festival Audience Award and selected by the British Council for representation. In 2006 Mark was commissioned to make “The Life Size Zoetrope” for Animate Projects, the Arts Council of England and Channel4. It was finally completed towards the end of 2007 and has won Best Film at the London International Animation Festival, Best Film in competition at Tampere, Finland, was shortlisted for 8 awards including 4 at the British Animation Awards, Edinburgh Film Festival, and Encounters Festival.
